Hellen Ascoli

Hellen Ascoli (Guatemala City, 1984) completed her MFA in Sculpture at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012, and is an artist, weaver, and educator; although these first three words are named separately to convey the area of discourse that Ascoli engages with, it could also just say “Weaver” a word that encompasses the other two.

She previously exhibited Cien tierras, a solo at Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; and has had numerous solo and two person shows including I Woke Up Early to Comb the World, Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City, Guatemala (2017); My body is not here (with James Sullivan), Conduit Gallery, Houston, Texas (2017); and Mi cuerpo no está aquí (with James Sullivan), Concepción 41, Antigua, Guatemala (2016). Additionally, she has and participated in numerous group exhibitions including Stone´s Throw, The Anderson Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia (2020); To Weave Blue // Poem to the Weaving, The Martha and Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art, The University of Memphis, Memphis, TN (2020); Objetos específicos (Specific objects) 1 y 2, SESC Video Brazil, 20 Contemporary Art Festival, São Paulo, Brazil (2017); and Guatemala from 33,000km: Contemporary Art 1960-Present, Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara, California (2017), amongst others.

In 2018 and 2019 she taught at The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Previously, she worked as Director of Education at the Museo Ixchel of Indigenous Dress in Guatemala from 2014- 2017, taught at Universidad Francisco Marroquín, and contributed to the design of the mediation programs for 19th and 20th Paiz Biennials in Guatemala.
