Frieze NY 2024

For Frieze New York 2024, Proyectos Ultravioleta proposes an exhibition around different ways to understand, relate to, and learn from nature, by listening and tapping into what the earth is communicating. Within the artworks, alternative responses to natural history and the current moment emerge. Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa invites us to tune into the language of plants, which through his engraved surfaces reminds us of dark stories of colonization. Akira Ikezoe’s “Not so Still Life” paintings remind us that everything that surrounds us is interconnected. We hear the river’s cry through the intertwined voices of Regina José Galindo and those of indigenous communities fighting for access to water in Guatemala. We connect with the surroundings of Vivian Suter’s garden, where paintings are made by the artist in collaboration with nature. We witness Johanna Unzueta’s meditative drawings subtly change over time, and in the words of the artist “become plants themselves.” And Edgar Calel and his family remind us we have the ability to walk through a forest at night, only if we become nature ourselves and allow for each of our footsteps which become the flickering of fireflies that guide our way.
