Radamés “Juni” Figueroa

SP Arte 2016

Solo Exhibition: Everything Revolves Around the Column
SP Arte, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Radamés “Juni” Figueroa (Bayamón, Puerto Rico, 1982) constructs systems that evoke and celebrate life; life thought of and lived as climate, flora, fauna, music, food, clothes and bars. The idea of living in the tropics, not only as a visual reference, but as an artistic position, is central to his work. He enables spaces for interaction between artistic practice and conviviality of the viewers. His projects take the shape of installations, ready-mades, paintings, music performances and drawing. He feels a particular preoccupation with cultural endeavors and has become an active agent in collaborations between art and music.

His work, Tree House – Casa Club, built in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, is emblematic of his larger body of work: a sculpture built over a tree that serves as a literal and metaphorical platform for sociability through exhibitions and concerts. He participated in the 2014 Whitney Biennial of American Art with his piece Breaking the Ice, a livable sculpture in the museum’s sculpture court, that was activated by invited musicians.

Recent exhibitions include “Naguabo Rainbow”, “Daguao Enchumbao” “Fango Fireflies” at the Sculpture Center (New York, NY, USA) and a residency for the exhibition “Sucursal” at La Ene at MALBA (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Solo shows include: “Rompiendo en Frio” at LTD Gallery (Los Angeles, CA, USA), “Current Times Savage Times” at Taymour Grahne Gallery (New York, NY, USA), “Oficina Final Feliz” at Casa Encendida (Madrid, Spain), “El Nido Salvaje” at NuMu (Guatemala City, Guatemala), “Me tuviste en frente y jamás me viste” at Revolver (Lima, Peru). Additionally, he created “La Loseta”, a 12 exhibition cycle in his own flat. And co-curated (with Pablo León de la Barra) “Trópico Abierto”, the 1st Great Tropical Biennial (Loíza, Puerto Rico).
