Dennis, the Florifundia and the Pato Poc

Proyectos Ultravioleta
Guatemala City, Guatemala

The curtain goes up.
There is a forest of exotic trees, old trees, of many years of age, that have seen death and birth throughout their long lives. In their roots, trunks, and
canopies have lived all sorts of animals; birds, insects, bats, squirrels, snakes and spirits of other dimensions that come here to rest at night.

After a strong dose of florifundia tea in Lake Atitlán, there are clothes scattered everywhere; Hawaiian type shirts and a pair of shorts over here, and cowboy boots over there. There are a couple of huge marihuana joints. And a toucan.

The curtain goes up.
After a long night, induced by large amounts of alcohol, Homer Simpson and Donald Trump appear flat on the floor of a room, laying unconscious. There are empty bottles everywhere, and there is Bart, staring them down, making fun, after having smeared both of their faces with lipstick.

Dennis, the florifundia and the pato poc is the most recent solo show by Puerto Rican artist Radames “Juni” Figueroa in which he collaborates, in part, with the Guatemalan sculptor Melvin Laz.

The exhibition is a kind of fictional short story, that narrates a hallucinogenic trip by Dennis: a fifty some year old American expat, living in Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, and strong supporter of Donald Trump in his attempt to become the next president of the United States of America.
One afternoon, after consuming a strong dose of florifundia tea (also known colloquially as floripondio, little bell, angel’s trumpet, judgment trumpet, huacachaca, estramony, borrachero, sabanero cacao, campanchú, queen of the night, big bell, or scientifically as Brugmansia) Dennis embarks in a mission to find any remaining traces of the pato poc – an extinct species of duck native to Lake Atitlán, last spotted in 1994- . However, rather than finding it, Dennis gets forever lost in a caricaturesque trip that is reminiscent of “Alice in Wonderland” in which he interacts with such uncanny characters as Homer and Bart Simpson, and Donald Trump.
