Akira Ikezoe

Frieze NY 2017

Solo Exhibition: Future Primitive
Booth B31
New York, USA

Born in Kochi, Japan, in 1979, and currently based in New York, Akira Ikezoe has been using painting, drawing, performance and animation to explore the meandering relationships between humans and nature. His work is as humorous as it is philosophical, suggesting that nature is not only around us, but most importantly, that it exists inside of us.

For Frieze Frame 2017 Ikezoe creates an immersive installation around his Future Primitive paintings. Similar to the paintings themselves, in which a series of plants are potted in a variety of ceramic and makeshift vases whilst standing alongside imaginary plant like sculptures -and set against flat colored backgrounds- the installation presents viewers with a liminal space in which the booth transcends into his elegant and contemplative paintings, and the paintings themselves become a mental extension of the inhabited space.

As a result, Proyectos Ultravioleta’s presentation will offer a subtle, yet striking, tension for the spectators of the fair to experience. In it, Ikezoe’s unique pictorial visual language sets the stage for a unique and immersive zen-like experience. Through a very careful and calculated exhibition display visitors will be invited (even if momentarily) to see the world through Akira’s eyes; one in which nature reigns the great outdoors, the constructed indoor spaces in which we live in, and most importantly the internal depths of our human condition.
