LISTE 2017

Solo Exhibition: Illusion of Matter
Room 3/6/2
Basel, Switzerland

For LISTE 2017, Proyectos Ultravioleta is pleased to present Illusion of Matter, a solo exhibition of recent work by Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa (b. 1978, Guatemala City).

Including video and sculpture, the presentation surveys Ramírez-Figueroa’s ongoing explorations of historical narrative through the circumstances of the body. In his most recent projects, the artist has looked to political histories of theater in Guatemala, recreating historical theatrical events with humor and pathos, and drawing from histories that overlap the personal with the national. His proposition–that intimacy both marks and subverts our collective myth-making–reveals itself through investigations of dreams, architecture, abstraction, theater, and the spiritual.

After projects and performances in the Guggenheim Museum NY, the 32nd São Paulo Bienal, Tate Modern, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, and If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to be Part of Your Revolution in 2015, 2016, and 2017, Ramírez-Figueroa is becoming widely-recognized as a significant international voice. Matthew McClean, writing for Frieze magazine notes, “Ramírez-Figueroa exposes the established tropical imaginary as a more complicated, sometimes devastating, narrative of cultural interference, exploitation and exchange”. This exhibition presents excerpts from that ongoing exposé, offering viewers a curated overview of Ramírez-Figueroa’s most important works of the last years.

In 2017 he received the Mies Van der Rohe Fellowship of the City of Krefeld, and as a result is currently exhibiting “Two Flamingos Copulating in a Tin Roof”, a solo exhibition at the Krefeld Kunstmuseen. Additionally, his work is currently featured in VIVA ARTE VIVA in the 57th Biennale di Venezia, the Leopold Museum in Vienna, and in “Linnaeus in Tenebris” a solo exhibition at the historic nave of the CAPC musée d’art contemporain in Bordeaux.
