Rosa Chavez 2020 Dried medicinal herbs and flowers; chilca, absinthe, apazote, garlic, citronella, fig, basil, tusa leaves, lavender, roses, jute. 25 x 26 in Plants were collected anciently (especially from the time) and the drying process is carried out to be able to use them medicinally in the necessary moments, preparing them to extract their essence, their spirit and their use in infusions, decoctions, plasters, macerated oils or tinctures. Also to save your seeds. This tradition continues as a legacy in the present as one more of the resistance of the peoples, the use of the medicine of the earth. Hanging the plants on logs in different parts of the house is a way in which the “hierberas” can be observing the drying process, they are in constant dialogue with medicine, they talk to it, they observe how they change, they use as needed. The plants in this piece are used in different ways for rheumatism, infections, fright, sadness, anxiety, indigestion, antibacterial, immune system, anti-inflammatory, flavoring. They were planted and harvested at the home of my mother and sister who carry out a collective work of recovery and use of them. In the present as a Mayan woman who lives in urbanity, I return to this practice that accompanies me in the transitions of this very complex and strong time, as a way to continue in connection with this heritage and make it live in my environment.

They are, they spread their guardian owl wings, they raise our wounded quetzal feathers
they shake us with strength and sometimes mark our body like the jaguar
they carve our Being, cleave our chest, open up the road that leads to the underworld
there it is, at the tip of the spiral they find the scar of contrition.
The light reaches us. Blessed clarity! We are here on rung number nine,
tz’uj, tz’uj, tz’uj spakle the travelling rivers, the medicinal waters, those that call
they whisper the soul, but when its necesary without pity they roar their name:
Grandmother – Grandfather, Mother – Father, day – night, wind, water, sky, earth, earth Mother Earth
pom, roses, kuxa, rue, let’s light up our ocote and smoke some of our tobacco ciagars.
Let it thunder, some two and three times let it thunder. Let’s open the thrid eye!
the rainbow time has arrived, the metamorphosis of our scared heart is close
it will be announced with drums and hornpipe, with chin chins and ocarinas, yes, it will be announced
death and also life. Shake, be born, grow, flower, breastfeed and repeat
shake, be born, grow, flower, breastfeed the offering, the word, the number of life.
Let’s untangle the word for the encounter, and listen to the voice of the sacred rod
let’s untangle the threads to weave our skin, to become jun b’atz’ jun chowen
so the tz’ula’ can take us by the hand, they mark the way, let’s go
let’s talk to the heart of the sky, earth, wind, water, let’s speak to the heart
let’s be fire, mountain, sea, volcano, hummingbird, let’s be spirit and midnight swirl.
