Pa ru tun che´ (From the Treetop)

Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City

Pa ru tun ché (From the treetop) is Edgar Calel’s first solo show at Proyectos Ultravioleta, showcasing new and recent works across a variety of media which include painting, sculpture, textile, video and installation, all of which evoke the traditions and beliefs of the Maya Kaqchikel Cosmovision.

His works offer an opportunity to question the expectations and fetishism around contemporary representations of indigeneity, making evident the mechanisms of systemic racism and discrimination directed at the indigenous people of Guatemala, over many centuries.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a series of activities and public programming in partnership with tropical papers where Calel is a current resident, as well as an written interview with its founder María Inés Rodríguez. tropical papers is a digital platform for reflection on art, architecture, design and scientific research to make visible the work and projects of artists and cultural practitioners focused on these disciplines from and in the Tropics.
