Sometimes you have to go down to go up

Proyectos Ultravioleta
Guatemala City, Guatemala

In his first solo show in Guatemala, Akira Ikezoe presents his most recent oil on canvas paintings from his “Coconut Heads” series. In them, characters with athletic and defined bodies -but without gender or ethnic traits that define them- have coconuts for heads and are seen performing numerous tasks in an automatic way.

Upon closer observation -and following the tradition of free association games of the surrealists- one can weave narratives made up of endless graphic associations that at a first glance seem absurd. And even though they are wildly imaginative and evidence his great sense of humor, Ikezoe’s paintings also function as satires of contemporary society in which, as individuals, we find ourselves performing endless working cycles completed through inertia, without any type of capacity to question our day to day in a critical way.
