Miami Son Machín is an exhibition that addresses some of the most common preconceptions around the idea of ”being Latin American”, Miami and, above all, the relationship between this last city covered by a myth of glory and glamor and a whole subcontinent. From the dismemberment of the name of a musical group that epitomized the idea of Latin America -in Miami- in the 90s, Miami Son Machín uses the three words separately to draw lines on which the different projects and works will run. that are part of the exhibition. These are: 1.) The idea of Miami as a reference and ultimate destination of the Latin American with aspirations; both in cases of forced migration (economic, political, etc.) and in those in which it becomes a mecca of shopping and glamor. 2.) The son, referred to the native rhythms of some Latin American countries, and music in general as a characteristic element of Latin culture: rhythm, dance, body and seduction are also part of this sensual category. 3.) Machín, a derivation of “macho”, includes works that construct and deconstruct the idea of Latin American man as the epitome of masculinity. Here broader issues about gender construction are also addressed by reference to a culture in which men are good men and women good women.

As a general approach, we want to make an exhibition of culture, experiences and gestures more than just works of art. To this end, they will also invite well-known plastic artists, musicians, designers, parties producers and fashionistas so that, through their work, they can contribute to dismember that fascinating world – in part imaginary – that is Miami.

This exhibition was carried out in follow-up to the symposium New Methods / New Methods, an international meeting on independent spaces with emphasis on training processes to be carried out at the Museum or Contemporary Art, North Miami, to which Proyectos Ultravioleta has been invited. The exhibition also wants to bring together artists and people involved in the different spaces invited to serve as an unofficial meeting point for the works carried out there.
