For the very first time in history, the Venice Biennial includes the participation of indigenous Guatemalan artists in its main exhibition. And it’s not just one, but 3 Maya Kaqchikel artists, all of whom hail from Chi Xot (San Juan Comalapa). They are Andrés Curruchich (1891-1969), Rosa Elena Curruchich (1958-2005), and Paula Nicho (1955).
As a way to celebrate their participation in the 60th Biennale di Venezia, and out of the desire to share their work with the cultural community of Guatemala, Proyectos Ultravioleta is pleased to present _To Name a Bird is to Sing With It (Nombrar un pájaro es cantar con él)_, a show that brings together 12 paintings by the 3 exhibiting artists.
This show offers a unique opportunity to delve into the customs, ancient practices and cosmovision of the Maya Kaqchikel community of Chi Xot, through three distinct intergenerational perspectives.
The show will be open from the 15th of July, and will be accompanied by a newly commissioned text by Quiché anthropologist, writer and cook María Jacinta Xón.
